GP Webinar | Addiction and dual diagnosis

The fourth instalment of the 2026 GP Webinar Series from St Patrick’s Mental Health Services (SPMHS) will provide a clinical overview of addiction and dual diagnosis.

Philip Kenny, Clinical Triage Coordinate with our Addiction and Dual Diagnosis Service, and Imelda McHugh, Addiction and Dual Diagnosis Services Manager, will present on the topic from 7pm on Wednesday, 7 October.

The hour-long webinar will explore the following topics:

  • how to recognise and assess alcohol withdrawal symptoms in the GP surgery
  • community-based alcohol detoxification
  • criteria for escalation to medical oversight and inpatient detoxification services
  • community addiction and recovery supports, including mutual aid and peer-support programmes.

GPs will also gain valuable insight into the referral pathway, triage decision-making process and the factors that influence timely access to specialist treatment. Practical guidance will be provided on the essential information required to ensure efficient triage and streamlined patient access to addiction services.
