St Patrick’s Mental Health Services (SPMHS) has hosted a mental health information session for the Ukrainian community on compassion-focused therapy (CFT).

Taking place on Monday, 6 November 2023, this session provided an introduction to understanding how our mind functions at time of crisis from a CFT perspective.

St Patrick’s Mental Health Services проводить вебінар про Терапія, орієнтована на співчуття. Ви можете дізнатися більше про цю цей вебінар і про те, як його відвідати, нижче.

CFT takes an evolutionary approach to understanding the human mind, suggesting we have evolved three different psychological systems adapted for three life tasks of:

  • avoiding harm
  • acquiring the resources we need to survive and reproduce
  • resting, digesting and caring for our offspring.

Survival and harm avoidance understandably dominate how our mind works at times of danger. On the one hand, this is helpful, but, over time, this can become stressful and exhausting. This talk described how we can use this understanding to regulate distress in our lives and cultivate a compassionate response to ourselves and others.

As SPMHS is an English-speaking organisation, we worked with a Ukrainian translator who attended the session and translated it into the Ukrainian language in real time.

You can watch the talk back below.
