In the second instalment of the 2026 GP Webinar Series from St Patrick’s Mental Health Services (SPMHS), Helen Price, Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist and Sean Power, Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist, will provide a clinical overview of insomnia; addressing its pathophysiology, diagnostic frameworks and evidence-based interventions.
Insomnia is the most prevalent sleep disorder globally, serving as a significant risk factor for various physical and mental health comorbidities. Current research suggests that insomnia often acts as a precursor to more complex conditions rather than merely a symptom. With an estimated 10–12% of the adult population meeting diagnostic criteria, and a significantly higher percentage reporting sub-clinical sleep difficulties, effective management in primary care is essential for improving long-term patient outcomes.
This hour-long webinar will cover the following topics:
- Defining insomnia: Establishing clinical criteria and differentiation from general sleep disturbances
- Clinical assessment: Implementing effective diagnostic tools and screening protocols in a primary care setting
- Predisposing, precipitating and perpetuating factors: Examining the underlying biological and psychological drivers of sleep-wake dysregulation
- Therapeutic interventions: Evaluating the non-pharmacological treatment modality of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia.
GPs can submit their questions in advance by emailing communications@stpatricks.ie or during the webinar using the Q&A function on Zoom.
CPD will be sought for this event. Points available will be confirmed closer to the time of the event.
