GP Webinar: Insomnia

In the second instalment of the 2026 GP Webinar Series from St Patrick’s Mental Health Services (SPMHS), Helen Price, Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist and Sean Power, Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist, will provide a clinical overview of insomnia; addressing its pathophysiology, diagnostic frameworks and evidence-based interventions.

Insomnia is the most prevalent sleep disorder globally, serving as a significant risk factor for various physical and mental health comorbidities. Current research suggests that insomnia often acts as a precursor to more complex conditions rather than merely a symptom. With an estimated 10–12% of the adult population meeting diagnostic criteria, and a significantly higher percentage reporting sub-clinical sleep difficulties, effective management in primary care is essential for improving long-term patient outcomes.

This hour-long webinar will cover the following topics:

  • Defining insomnia: Establishing clinical criteria and differentiation from general sleep disturbances
  • Clinical assessment: Implementing effective diagnostic tools and screening protocols in a primary care setting
  • Predisposing, precipitating and perpetuating factors: Examining the underlying biological and psychological drivers of sleep-wake dysregulation
  • Therapeutic interventions: Evaluating the non-pharmacological treatment modality of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia.

GPs can submit their questions in advance by emailing communications@stpatricks.ie or during the webinar using the Q&A function on Zoom.

CPD will be sought for this event. Points available will be confirmed closer to the time of the event.
