Recovery (WRAP®) Programme

The Recovery Programme aims to empower service users to monitor their mental health and to address factors that may block or support their recovery.

This is a day service programme for service users of St Patrick’s Mental Health Services (SPMHS) who are discharged from inpatient, Homecare or Dean Clinic services or who may want to avoid coming into hospital. It is also open to people who are not currently under the care of SPMHS.

During the Recovery Programme, service users create their own WRAP®, which means a Wellness Recovery Action Plan. Additional groupwork sessions on recovery topics which support WRAP® are also included in the programme, such as:

  • Motivation to Change
  • Self and Relationships
  • Self-Esteem
  • Building Social Supports
  • Enhancing General Health.

What is WRAP®?

WRAP® (Wellness Recovery Action Plan) is a structured way of monitoring uncomfortable and distressing signs, feelings and behaviours. A person develops their own WRAP® to have a planned response which aims to reduce, change or get rid of those signs, feelings and behaviours. Their WRAP® also includes plans for responses from other people when their symptoms make it impossible for them to continue to make decisions, take care of themselves, or keep themselves safe.

WRAP® was developed by people who have been dealing with mental health difficulties for many years and who are working hard on their recovery. It follows a logical structure, which was developed by Mary Copeland and includes wellness tools, as well as action plans relating to:

  • daily maintenance
  • triggers
  • early warning signs
  • things breaking down
  • crisis planning.

You can learn more about WRAP® here.

The WRAP® segment of the Recovery Programme is facilitated by accredited, advanced-level WRAP® facilitators who were trained by the Copeland Centre.

How is the Recovery Programme structured?

The Recovery Programme is delivered online, and has a number of elements, outlined below.

Recovery Day Programme

The Recovery Day Programme is a day programme which service users attend between 9.30am to 4.30pm for one day a week over 10 weeks.

Recovery Evening Programme

The Recovery Evening Programme takes place for one evening a week over six weeks, with its typical timetable running between 6pm and 9.30pm. It is designed especially for people who cannot attend the Recovery Day Programme due to work or college commitments.

Recovery Refresher

The Recovery Refresher takes place over two days and is available to service users who have completed either the Recovery Day Programme or Recovery Evening Programme. It is recovery-focused and is aimed at service users who are using their WRAP® plan and would like some support in updating or recapping on some aspects of WRAP®.

Recovery Aftercare Programme

The Recovery Aftercare Programme is a structured programme for anyone who has completed the Recovery Programme and wishes to have ongoing support and engagement with using their WRAP®. Service users can attend its Connection Café from 4.30pm to 8pm on one Wednesday evening a month for one year after completing the Recovery Programme. Each session is themed and based on WRAP® principles.

How do referrals work?

Service users already under the care of SPMHS can be referred by their consultant psychiatrist or any member of their multidisciplinary team.

Referrals can also be accepted for people not currently under the care of SPMHS by their GPs or mental health teams in other services using our usual referral pathways.
