  • Depression and Relationships
  • Occupational Therapy Group- Stress Management
  • Unravelling Depression

Goal Setting and Discussion

This group is facilitated on a weekly basis. It aims to guide participants through the principles involved in S.M.A.R.T goal planning and emphasises the value of goal-setting and behavioural activation as a means of challenging factors that maintain depression.

Reflection and Assessment

This group is held on a weekly basis and provides an opportunity for participants to explore through writing and discussion, their personal experience of recovery within the programme. Participants are invited and may choose to add their personal reflection and assessment to their healthcare record. If they do so it becomes a part of their medical notes. We find it is an essential means of guiding personal treatment and developing a more autonomous approach to personal recovery.

Depression Recovery and WRAP

This group is facilitated on a weekly basis. The Wellness Recovery Action Plan is used as a central component. Weekly content may include themes around dealing with symptoms of depression and stress, exploring personal lifestyle and discovering personal wellness tools. Many people who have been diagnosed with depression experience significant changes in appetite; sleep etc. which can become unhealthy patterns that remain established even after the initial problem of depression is resolved. This group aims to address these specific problems and bring the participants focus and awareness back to resolving them.

Depression and Relationships

This group is facilitated by Charlotte Kennedy. It introduces the concept of systemic psychotherapy which explores underlying systems in our lives ‘such as groups we belong to and family and relationships. The group focuses each week on personal experiences of depression. The impact of depression on our relationships is explored and the impact of relationships on personal experiences of depression.

Occupational Therapy Group - Stress Management:

This group is facilitated on a weekly basis by an Occupational Therapist. This group aims to help you to develop practical skills that can assist you in managing your stress in daily life. This group will focus on stress management and relaxation techniques and how to implement them in daily life as well as discuss lifestyle balance and how achieving that balance can assist with decreasing stress.

Unravelling Depression

Unravelling Depression is held on a weekly basis. Participants are introduced to the cognitive psychotherapy (CBT) model of depression. These are workshop style groups. They introduce each participant to concepts of CBT for depression. This is used in order to allow participants to discover the true nature of depression and the personal factors occurring that lead to states of despair and feelings of helplessness.

The CBT model explores depression as a cycle that is self- maintaining. The group aims to encourage positive change that will unravel or reverse this cycle.

Mindfulness and a focus on Compassion

Principles of Mindfulness and Compassion Focused Therapy are introduced and explored. Participants engage in mindfulness practice each week.

Keys to Wellbeing

This is a discussion group facilitated by Dr. Martina Corry, Consultant Psychiatrist. The topics for discussion are themes that have been generated from group participants. There is also room within this group to focus on a particular issue that is relevant to the existing group at the time. Common discussions within this group are: Treatment of Depression; Dealing with Stress; Combatting Stigma.

AIMS:

  • Enhance awareness of treatment options in relation to depression and common factors that can lead to relapse.
  • Encourage participants to examine personal coping mechanisms and behaviours that may add to health problems.
  • Encourage participants to take an active role in maintaining their health.
  • Encourage participants to embrace and sustain recovery.
The atmosphere of the hospital is very bright, cheerful and friendly. The staff are excellent, uniformly helpful without exception and a credit to the hospital
There is a very good atmosphere at St. Patrick's. Communication is very good between patients and staff and should be maintained on an informal basis. Food is very good and is a very good morale booster for everyone. I would like to thank everyone in St. Patrick's for input and kindness while I have been here
I had 10 unforgettable days with prime quality care and facilities. Most of all, I've met really nice people and hopefully not being wrong made some friends. Good work, keep it up

I came to hospital feeling broken and despairing and leave now feeling renewed and well and looking to the future.
Excellent staff have finally helped me overcome my illness with the correct treatment and also using the recovery psychosis programme which opened my mind to what I suffer from.
