FAQ

  • How do I find the Dean Capel addictions clinic?
  • What is the degree of family involvement in my programme?

How Do I Access the Service

Referral to the Addictions and Dual Diagnosis Service is made through your GP or Consultant Psychiatrist. If you are worried about your own mental health or that of a relative / friend, your first point of contact should be your GP. They will discuss your mental health treatment needs with you. Following assessment by your GP, they may recommend that you are referred for an assessment at the Dean Capel Addictions Clinic or alternatively, your GP may suggest that you need to come straight to Hospital for inpatient care.

What does detoxification involve?

Because detoxification often entails a more intensive level of care, there is no practical value in defining a period in which a person is "in detoxification".

You may be placed on bed-rest for this duration. This means that you are confined to the centre, and we would encourage you to rest, eat well, and drink lots of fluids whilst being monitored. Visits are allowed from family/friends at this time but we would discourage a lot of stimulation and therefore visits should be kept to a minimum.

You will be asked for a urine sample on admission - and equally random samples will be requested during your inpatient stay. This sample is used for drug testing.

You will also be breathalysed on admission - and randomly tested throughout your stay. This safeguards you - and the team involved in your care.

You will be met by an addiction counsellor during detox; this is to introduce themselves to you and to discuss the programme you will be agreeing to. Signing a contract to engage in the treatment programme will be done at this stage.

How much does treatment cost?

Your healthcare insurance covers the cost of a four week inpatient stay in hospital and a 12 week “step-down” programme as an outpatient. You will then be requested to attend aftercare, which is a group run once weekly in St Patrick’s Hospital and or/ The Dean Clinic and costs €40 per group session. This will be paid for by you.

Aftercare is run by a trained addiction counsellor and between both - you will jointly decide on the length of attendance (recommended 1 year approximately).

How do I find the Dean Capel addictions clinic?

The Dean Clinic is easily accessible via the red line Luas.

Dean Clinic Capel

Suite 501,

Capel Buildings,

Mary's Abbey (Capel Street),

Dublin 7.

What is the degree of family involvement in my programme?

Alcoholism and drug abuse affects the entire family, not just the alcohol/drug dependent. Quite often family members do not realise how deeply they have been affected by chemical dependency. Family involvement is an important component of recovery.

Our programme requires a named person, either family or concerned significant other, to be part of your treatment. You will be asked for a name, address and phone number for this person, and consent to same.

The atmosphere of the hospital is very bright, cheerful and friendly. The staff are excellent, uniformly helpful without exception and a credit to the hospital
There is a very good atmosphere at St. Patrick's. Communication is very good between patients and staff and should be maintained on an informal basis. Food is very good and is a very good morale booster for everyone. I would like to thank everyone in St. Patrick's for input and kindness while I have been here
I had 10 unforgettable days with prime quality care and facilities. Most of all, I've met really nice people and hopefully not being wrong made some friends. Good work, keep it up

I came to hospital feeling broken and despairing and leave now feeling renewed and well and looking to the future.
Excellent staff have finally helped me overcome my illness with the correct treatment and also using the recovery psychosis programme which opened my mind to what I suffer from.
